About Course

Course Description
This program of study is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills that are required for you to become a Medical Assistant. The Medical Assistant program educates students to collect blood and process blood and body fluids, perform medical front and back-office tasks, and clinical procedures under the supervision of a Physician or Nurse Practitioner. Medical Assistants typically work in concert with clinical laboratory personnel and other healthcare providers in clinics or other healthcare facilities. Through classroom work and skills lab training, students learn to collect blood specimens by venipuncture, finger sticks, heel sticks, vision, and hearing screening. At the conclusion of your class/lab instruction, you are required to complete 160 hours of externship at a medical facility.
Upon successful completion of all requirements, students are prepared to sit for the NHA National Certification Exam.

 

Class Prerequisite
Nurse Aid Program Certificate. Valid Nurse Aid Certification in Good Standing.

 

Licensure / Certification
Although not required for employment, certification reflects the competency learned and skills obtained through this training and provides an advantage when seeking employment. Students are encouraged to obtain a CNA license upon completion of the course.

 

Employment Outlook
Medical Assistants can work in clinical laboratories, hospitals, community health centers, nursing homes, doctors’ offices, blood donation centers, and other healthcare facilities.
